Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream

Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream is needed in this cold wintery weather! Did you know Hot Cocoa and Hot Chocolate are two different drinks? Hot Cocoa is made with cocoa powder, milk and sugar, that’s how my grandmother used to make it. Hot Chocolate is literally that: chocolate melted in cream, milk or water.
Today I made hot chocolate, I used milk and of course a dollop of whipped cream. Wow that was ridiculous, I literally had to rest for a bit after finishing it, but what else are Sundays for!
There’s something about real hot chocolate that feels like the ultimate luxury. It’s thick, silky, and basically a warm hug in a mug. The kind of drink that forces you to slow down and just exist for a moment. No emails, no to-do lists—just you, your chocolate, and maybe a cozy blanket.

I also love how customisable it is. Dark chocolate for a rich, slightly bitter kick. A bit of cinnamon or nutmeg if you’re feeling fancy. Or go full indulgence mode with marshmallows, caramel drizzle, or even a pinch of sea salt (trust me on this one).
So if you need an excuse to treat yourself, consider this it. Make the hot chocolate. Add the whipped cream. Take a ridiculous, unnecessary break afterward. You deserve it.
Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream
Ingredients
- 500 ml milk (see notes)
- 100 g dark chocolate
- Whipped cream (optional)
- A drop of whiskey or dark rum (optional)
Instructions
Start by shaving or chopping the chocolate very finely, the finer the quicker it melts.
Heat the milk and when steaming add the chocolate.
On a low heat stir the chocolate through the milk until melted.
When melted, pour in a cup and add a drop of whiskey or rum if you like.
Top off with some whipped cream. Enjoy!
Notes
Any type of mil will do: skimmed milk, soy milk, almond milk. But I feel if I'm going to indulge anyway I might as well do it properly, so I used whole fat milk.
