French toast made from Frisian Sugar Loaf (Sûkerbôle)

Last week when I was camping and visiting a friend in Friesland I couldn’t resist taking back a local Frisian Sugar Loaf: sweet, cinammony, sticky and amazing with a lick of salty butter. But it’s not only good just as it is, as French toast it’s ridiculous, and only meant for Sundays 😉

By Saffron Serves: 2-4
Prep Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of Frisian sugar loaf
  • Butter or oil to fry in
  • 2 eggs
  • 150 ml milk (I used soy milk because that is what we had, any milk will do)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • To serve
  • Butter
  • Sprinkle of granulated sugar and cinnamon

Instructions

1

Mix the eggs, milk, salt and cinnamon in a deep but flat bowl 150 ml soy milk

2

Let the thick slices soak up the batter for a minute max on each side (not longer or it will soak up too much moisture and become soggy).

3

Pan fry in some butter until golden and crispy.

4

Serve with a nob of salty butter and cinnamon sugar.

5

Best eaten straight away!
